Imagen higienista (Benjamín Vicuña Mackena y sus secuaces), 2020

Digitally intervened early twentieth century photograph of Santiago City Intendent Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna, a conservative liberal, standing with other government officials on top of Huelen Hill, which he saw wanted to transform into a French-style park. This park would not only provide a green lung in the middle of the city, it would also serve to separate the city’s elite from the indigenous and peasant migrants that were arriving to the city at the time and whom Vicuña Mackenna saw as a ‘dirty’ and uncouth population that had to be cleansed. Revecco intervenes the hilltop with phrases and slogans used by protesters during the ‘estallido social’, thereby connecting the segregationist views of the Chilean elite of the past with the social separation and injustice of the present.
